Completed 2021
Due to start Sept 2019

2019 – Wallace completed the Concrete and Formwork on this new 8 story apartment building. Situated on a tight site on Kent Terrace the heavy foundations and car-stacker pit are all beneath the road with Shotcrete and tanking required around the buildings perimeter.
4m high Insitu concrete walls and columns around the Perimeter of the Ground Floor carpark encases the structural steel frame and providing the required bracing of the building. All formwork was supplied and installed by Wallace Building Contractors.
The upper levels are ComFlor 80 with through deck welded studs with the ComFlor supplied and installed by our Wellington Studwelders division.
Wallace Building Contractors has been contracted by Fletcher Construction to build the new 10 story carpark building and Concourse at the Wellington Airport.
With the 38,500m2 carpark and the 9500m2 two story concourse At 48,000m2 This will be the largest building built in Wellington since Te Papa. The Carpark will be constructed with huge Precast Beam/Column units. Some of these are up to 23 Tonne per unit and will be installed with a 400T crawler crane. However the building is not completely Precast with 8,600m3 of insitu concrete in the Carpark and 2400m3 of insitu concrete in the Concourse there is a total of 11,000m3 of concrete being poured in the project.
The Carpark is to be built in 3 stages due to the size of the building and the required crane access. The 4000m3 Raft Slab will be formed first in 5 stages from April – June 2016.
Stage One of the Carpark Building will be constructed from May – November 2016 and another 9 floors will be built which will include 2 Ramps running from the Ground to the top floor. The 1.5m deep raft slab will be poured and insitu columns will be formed 3m high under the Mezzanine floor and up to 9m high up to the precast column Connection on Level 2.
Stage Two will then be built from the Raft Slab up to the roof which incorporates a stair and lift tower plus a large curved ramp on Level 2-3. Stage 2 will be built from November 2016 – March 2017.
The Third Stage will then be constructed from March 2017 – September 2017
In addition to the main Carpark Building starting in May the first Stage of the Concourse structure will be constructed. This involves 1300m3 of large column pads and foundation beams, 900 dia insitu concrete columns up to 6m high and a mixture of Precast and Insitu Beams to the Concourse upper level. The First stage will also involve the construction of the first of the 2 large Entry/Exit Ramps with 450mm thick insitu concrete walls. The First Stage of the Concourse should be completed in September 2016.
Stage 2 of the Concourse is completed once the Third stage of the Carpark Building is underway and involves the Same construction methods as the first stage of the Concourse but with the addition of 700mm deep curved insitu edge beams. Also included in this stage is the new Entry Ramp to new carpark and connection and ramp onto the existing Airport Terminal Concourse. This Stage will be undertaken from January 2017 to October 2017
2018
2018 – Wallace Building Contractors under its Wellington Studwelders division installed ComFlor over 16 levels for this Office Building at the site of the old BP House. The BP Building was damaged in the Seddon Earthquakes when the stairwell disconnected from the side of the Building. Engineers found the building was too extensively damaged to save and so it was demolished to make way for this new 18000m2 16 level office tower.
The building was designed by Dunning Thornton using base isolaters on top of new piles in the old BP house basement. The Steel frame used was a new “Diagrid” system eliminating most internal columns in the building to provide large 1200m2 floor plates.
ComFlor 60 and 80 was specified as the flooring system and with over 18,000m2 and 35,000 shear studs, it was the biggest ComFlor project ever undertaken in Wellington to date.
Project 56

2015 – Wallace through our Wellington Studwelders division supplied and installed the ComFlor to this 4200m2 Annex addition to the upgrade of 56 the Terrace being upgraded by LT McGuinness. Split between 2 buildings up to 9 floors high we installed the ComFlor, edge trim and through deck shearstud welding in around 4 days per floor.
One Market Lane
2013 – One Market Lane sits on a landmark island site at the edge of Wellingtons waterfront and in the heart of the city. Prominently located on the corner of Taranaki and Cable Streets. Wallace Building Contractors was specifically sort by main contractor LT McGuinness due to our history in Wellington High Rise construction to complete the concrete works for this very innovative post Christchurch earthquake “low damage” concrete design. The 6 level high podium structure is constructed entirely in concrete with over 3500m3 of concrete and using the latest seismic design including forming multiple hinge joints to column/beam connections and a flexible 450mm thick corewall the entire 12 floors of the building.
High quality apartments are located on the top 6 floors of One Market Lane and the structure is lightened to Structural Steel with over 7000m2 of Comflor 80 flooring installed with through deck studwelding installed by Wallace.

2013 – Wallace completed the concrete and Comflor on Stratum Managements tallest building so far. With 16 floors Elevate Apartments is the tallest residential apartment complex built in Wellington and the most high tech incorporate cutting- edge new earthquake strengthening technology.
Elevate includes precision-engineered steel springs at the base of each of its structural wall frames. The springs, imported from Germany, will cushion earthquake vibrations and allow the building to weather a quake with minimal disruption. Wallace Building Contractors cast in the steel base connecting beams with a +/-0.5mm tolerance required.
A mixture of interspan and over 8000m2 of ComFlor 80 is used in the concrete floors and as Wellingtons Comflor Metal Tray flooring installers Wallace we had Elevate racing up to the top floor to set a new bench mark in Wellington high rise construction.

2012 – Construction of a 6 level very high quality apartment complex with 2 levels of Carparking in the Basement levels for Stratum Management.
Wallace has been involved in construction of this high quality apartment complex in this difficult to build on site. The Basement levels have been constructed right to the boundary against established buildings. Wallace produced the tall Pre-cast wall panels and erected them on site while only excavating small areas of the bank with the use of No-fines concrete as backfill allowing waterproof tanking to be installed in a controlled condition. Due to the amount of ground work involved the building was staged in 2 sections then caught up once nearing completion of the final floors.
The Peak

2011 – Construction of an 11 level apartment block on the corner of Taranaki & Wigan St for Arrow International Using Comfloor 80 Steel Tray Flooring System Wallace worked with the Project Manager from Arrow on a construction methodology for this building to advance the programme.
After discussions on the merits of our and other formwork systems it was agreed our methodology of steel formwork shearwall system could achieve the required tight programme required. Piling of this site finished 1 week before Christmas and Wallace worked through the Christmas break to be ready for the first lift of structural steel by mid January. By the 7th of June the building reached Level 11 more than 2 months ahead of programme.
Republic 1 & 2

2010 – This 138 apartment building was built in 2 stages with a building footprint of 2400m2 and 3 levels of carparking for Stratum Management.
The buildings were constructed with large concrete shearwalls and the Stahlton flooring system. Once construction of Republic 1 was underway Wallace discussed with Stratum the possibility of starting work earlier than planned on the mainly carpark structure in the south tower of Republic 2.
The developers were keen to see the project advance and it meant the code of compliance issues arising from an unfinished carpark for Republic 1 was negated and the settlement date for purchasers on the first tower was brought forward two months, with completion of Republic 2 also earlier with handover ready at the end of June 2011.

2008 – This 10-story complex houses 146 mostly 3 bedroom apartments and has a floor footprint of nearly 2500m2. Wallace was the Concrete contractor for Stratum Management and is their biggest project to date. It was constructed with an underground basement carpark with perimeter insitu walls and foundations going 1.2m below sea level. The two buildings were constructed as one large podium structure up to level two with two 8 story towers above. Each tower has a large core shearwall system of 60m3 per floor. The two lift core foundation pads are 600m3 pads 1.6m deep.

2007 – This high quality complex was built to look like 3 small apartment blocks along Oriental Parade. It had 2 floors of car parking under the ground with concrete perimeter walls and 3 core shearwall systems for each building up to the 5th floors.

2006 – This 10-story apartment complex was constructed with large exterior concrete walls and stahlton rib flooring system. It also included an underground basement.

2005 – This 9-story building provided 4 bedroom apartments to students at nearby Massey University. It was constructed with concrete shearwalls and stahlton rib flooring system.

2004 – This 15-story Building containing 109 apartments was constructed with 4 floors below the Terrace entrance. It was constructed with large 30T pre-cast panels cast onsite in the basement areas and with a large 400mm wide core shearwall system.
Paremata Storage

2019 completed

2018 – Wallace was contracted by Tracer Construction to undertake the concrete works for the 2018 release of apartments at Whitby Lakes Retirement Village. The building is buried into the side of the side of a hill with anchor beams supporting the basement carpark. The building consists of 8 shear walls running full height and with Interspan ribs and insitu balconies.

2018 – Wellington Studwelders was contracted by Naylors to install ComFlor and Studwelding to this 4000sqm project behind the existing facade at the Wellington East Girls College.

2018 – Wallace managed the Structural Build for our long time clients, Stratum on this 3 story commercial and childcare development in Thorndon Quay. With no piles required we formed and poured over 700m3 of concrete in the foundations of this solid building which is 130% of the building code. 20T concrete panels were formed and installed around the buildings perimter and the floors were formed using ComFlor 80 supplied and installed by our Wellington Studwelders division (www.wellingtonstudwelders.co.nz)
VUW Gateway Building

2017 – Wallace completed the formwork and were the concrete subcontractor for Fletcher Construction at the 12000m2 Gateway Building at Victoria Universitys Kelburn campus. Wallace Building was engaged to undertake the enabling works to prepare for construction on two large sites. This involved Crane Bases for the 2 tower cranes and retaining works.
The Southern Zone was built literally into the side of a hill. Wallace constructed the suspended crane base early to allow construction of the 15m high anchored pile wall. 600mm dia piles were drilled into the ground to suit the existing topography and Wallace extended these piles up by forming 600mm columns up to 10m above the existing ground level. We also installed the 500m2 of timber lagging behind the columns to allow backfilling of Kelburn Parade
The Northern zone has been excavated approx. 6-9m deep into the existing carpark for construction of the large basement area which will eventually have the Culliford Drive over top of the basement roof. We installed the 200+ precast panels around the perimeter of the basement levels and the large shearwalls. Other work involved in the basement are the footings, panel stitches and insitu columns.
Gibson Sheat Carpark

2017 – Wallace Building Contractors completed the formwork and were the concrete subcontractor for Naylor Love on the Carpark Building behind the Gibson Sheat Centre. The 5 level Carpark is being constructed around the back of the L shape building to provide carparking and strengthen the existing building.
A 750m3 concrete raft slab up to 1500mm high was installed behind the existing building on concrete piles with 11 full height shearwalls installed around the carpark. Some of the Shearwalls were up to 500mm thick and were constructed with one sided formwork against the existing building. Permanent steel formwork was installed in the existing window openings and the new concrete shearwalls were connected to the existing building with long threaded bar installed through the existing buildings concrete beams and floors.
The Steel frame structure had all columns encased in 400×400 concrete columns on each level and a curving concrete ramp which will provide access to the Levels.

2017 – Wallace Building Contractors were proud to be involved as the Concrete and Formwork subcontractor to Fletcher Construction for The Ministry for Primary Industries new, high-level biocontainment laboratory in Upper Hutt. Situated at the National Centre for Biosecurity and Infectious Disease (NCBID) in Wallaceville, the $87 million investment will provide assurance to our trading partners that New Zealand remains free of diseases that could stop our animal products being accepted offshore.
High-level biocontainment laboratories are uncommon. They are highly complex and required to meet a range of international standards for the safe handling of high-risk infectious organisms including keeping a close eye on construction details and maintaining the highest levels of quality assurance.
The new lab is designed to survive a one in 2,500 year earthquake. It’ll meet the same earthquake protection requirements to withstand an earthquake as hospitals, airport control towers, and water treatment plants. The building will sit on 10 base isolators and 20 slider bearings to reduce damage and protect biocontainment during an earthquake.
Insitu concrete beams sit on top of the base isolators contained inside concrete rattle space walls. The ground floor beams are anchored to the ground with four 1.8m dia hold-down piles with metal strands coming out of the piles 14m below ground and allowing the building to move sideways in a large earthquake but provide anchorage to the ground.
The floors above are 2200m2 of 200mm thick F5 finished insitu concrete floors with thickenings at penetrations and the steel beams to encase the steel framed upper structure. High quality formwork was produced in our Porirua workshop and installed on site in prefabricated units. The floors are a highly specified concrete design requiring 30 days of water curing.
Cerca Townhouses

2016 – Wallace Building Contractors formed the concrete slabs and walls for this 34 unit Townhouse Development in Newtown. The townhouses were constructed in 2 stages with Stage 1 comprising of 22 townhouses in 6 blocks on a relatively flat site. Stage 2 involved an additional 12 units in 2 blocks built into the side of the hill with anchored retaining walls and large footings.
With all units sold off the plans work was fast tracked to complete the project in time for the Developers next project.

2016 – Wallace was engaged by Hawkins Construction to undertake the concrete works to the Wellington International Airport southern extension to the Main Terminal Building. It was a new and significant project for Wellington Airport and the first major work to the Main Terminal Building since its opening in 1999.
Wallace designed and built the formwork for around 80 Insitu concrete columns ranging from 500-500mm up to 800x800mm. A mixture of Insitu and 16T precast beams were installed over 2 levels and stitched together with hollowcore and Flatdeck for the floor structure.
As the Airport has to be able to load and unload planes until around 11:00pm a lot of the major floor construction was completed at night over the baggage handlers roadway. Also noisy works such as scabbling and drilling had to be undertaken in the early hours of the morning to not disrupt the 15000 passengers travelling through the airport each day.
There was also upgrades done to the southern gates 9,10 and 11, A new pedestrian walkway down to the Sounds Air access with Hammerheads, ramps etc and works to the Existing façade on the runway side to allow installation of the Huge trusses that were installed over top of the existing terminal building.
Avenida Townhouses

2015 – Wallace completed the townhouse foundations and slabs for this 20 unit townhouse development in Crofton Downs.
Briscoes

2014 – Wallace completed the concrete works on the new 2200m2 Briscoes store in Paraparaumu. Work involved construction of large concrete foundation beams due to the poor site conditions. Installation of the large perimeter concrete panels including 22T entry panels and forming of the LESA construction joins to the slab pours.

2014 – Wallace was contracted by Maycroft Construction for the manufacture and installation of the precast panels for this new build in Petone. Due to the large infrastructure projects underway in Wellington Maycroft could not find a precast yard able to produce the panels to meet the tight program. WBC proposed to form the panels onsite on an area of slab and are nearing completion of the 52 panels. Wallace also constructed the mezzanine floor of the building which includes large 350mm thick insitu cantilevered slabs.
Nouvo Apartments

2013 – Another project with Stratum Management this complex consists of two 5 story apartment blocks housing 44 apartments and eleven 2 story townhouses. Constructed with a mixture of Interspan and ComFlor the apartments feature stunning views over the Basin Reserve and while the boys were busy constructing them over the summer they enjoyed catching a glance of the New Zealand cricket teams superb efforts.
Masina Apartments

2012 – Wallace was subcontracted to complete the concrete work to this 72 Unit Apartment complex on Riddiford St, Newtown for Redican and Allwood. The lower level of the building is constructed with large insitu concrete beams with large spans to allow carparking and retail on the Ground Floor and 3 levels of Apartments above with insitu shearwalls and interspan flooring.

2012 – Concrete works for 20 townhouse units in Wright St, Mount Cook for Stratum Management. The sloping site iwas extensively excavated to create a large flat site for the townhouses yards, carparking and public spaces. This involves the use of multi level concrete retaining walls some up to 5m high and 400mm thick. Due to the height of the excavation cuts a lot of the excavation and construction of the retaining walls has to be staged and involves extensive underpinning and temporary.

2011 – Wallace are proud to be part of the construction of the Centre of Creative Arts building (COCA) at Massey University working for Arrow International. This building is a world first with the use of Post Tensioned timber LVL Columns and beams with concrete foundations, beams, floors, shearwalls and structual systems. The building has been designed to sway during an earthquake then spring back to its original position. The Athfield designed building has many decorative concrete features including bandsawn finish concrete panels cantilevering out from the floors, Insitu plinths, stairs and corbels with recessed lighting and extensive decorative finish concrete siteworks. Wallace also completed the 3000m2 of extensive decorative concrete siteworks.

2010 – Concrete work involved in the construction of the replacement Gymnasium at Rongotai College after a fire destroyed the previous Gym. The work involves a 200m3 slab pour, round concrete columns and precast perimeter panels poured onsite.

Salamander Warehouse Miramar
Main Contractor on the construction of a 1600m2 warehouse in Park Road. The warehouse included pre-cast concrete walls with fire-rated cladding above. And 300m2 of Offices.
Scenic Circle Hotel – Napier
Subcontracting to Arrow International on the construction of the new 140-room Te Pania Hotel on Marine Parade Napier. This work included concrete foundations, floor slabs and extensive pre-cast erection including all walls and floors of the hotel.
Shed R – Centerport
8000m2 building in Centerport using a 150mm thick post tensioned slab poured after the building was erected. Also 360m of 2.4m high concrete panels poured and erected on site.
Harvey Normans Porirua
4500m2 concrete slab and concrete columns to the new Harvey Normans store. Wallace also worked on carpentry in the store including linings and fire rating.
Countdown Supermarket – Upper Hutt
Earthworks, Concrete slabs and pre-cast panels, carpentry and partial fit-out of the new Countdown Supermarket constructed in Upper Hutt.
Wallace Building Contractors have completed a range of Re‑strengthening and Seismic Upgrades to buildings around Wellington for the past 20 years. Including heritage listed buildings, private dwellings and strengthening of large commercial high rises. From this previous history of working on seismic upgrades and refurbishment of buildings Wallace Building Contractors has developed specialised procedures and methodologies to complete the unique Wellington seismic upgrade projects. WBC has worked on a number of Category 1 and 2 Historic buildings and understands the unique requirements of these projects.

2015 – Wallace Building Contractors was contracted by Naylor Love to undertake the Concrete, Reinforcing and Comflor Installation to the Hutt City Council’s administration building in Laings Road which undertook a major seismic strengthening refurbishment and extension.
The building was extended with a new 4 story Annex constructed on the side of the existing building clad in glass and featuring a full height atrium. The Existing building had all foundations replaced with large foundation beams on piles with seismic upgrading of the exterior walls. All existing concrete floors were removed and replaced with a Comflor 80 flooring system with through deck welding installed by Wallace Buildings specialist company Wellington Stud Welding.

2014 – Wallace Building Contractors was contracted by Hawkins to undertake the concrete and reinforcing to the seismic upgrade of Colonial House in Lower Hutt. New 300m3 foundation pads are being formed to replace the existing foundations with new steel K-Frames between the existing insitu concrete columns. 450mm deep Insitu concrete collector beams were installed throughout the upper levels of the building with H40 reinforcing bars to tie it all together.

2014 – Wallace Building Contractors was contracted by LT McGuinness to install Comflor 210 to the Level 7 Podium of the PWC Building. Huge structural steel braces have been installed under the existing interspan floor system which is being removed and replaced with a Comflor 210 concrete floor system. Over two thousand 200mm long shear studs were site welded by WBC onto the beams after the Comflor was installed. All work is took place in a live working carpark building with minimal disruption to the PWC building tenants.

2014 – Wallace completed the concrete, renforcing and fitout for Naylor Love for this major seismic upgrade of this building opposite the Embassy Theatre. New concrete foundations, columns and shearwalls were built for Structural Steel K-Braces to be installed for the next 3 floors with new insitu concrete floor slab infills to bring this building closer to the current earthquake code.

2013 – Wallace was asked by Arrow International to undertake the seismic upgrade of Cumberland House at 235 Willis St due to our previous experience with strengthening works and resources available in a very tight timeframe. The student accommodation building seismic strengthening involves two sprayed concrete Shearwalls 5 floors high the full width of the building, self-compacting concrete spandrels and upgrades to the existing columns and floors. The seismic upgrade of the building was not originally planned when the building’s interior was due to be refurbished over the Students summer break due to the impending sale to overseas owners and Wallace had to commit to having the strengthening work completed by the first week of February. Work started in December 2012 one week behind schedule and Wallace worked all through Christmas with a large crew of staff and subcontractors and finished the strengthening works Three weeks ahead of schedule on the 16th of January 2013. Arrow has expressed their gratitude at the hard work and professionalism that Wallace showed to allow them to complete the buildings refurbishment on time.

This existing carpark building was seismically upgraded in 2003 to allow the construction of 5 stories of apartments to be built on the top of the carpark. Wallace was involved in the construction of new 300mm thick Shearwalls built between existing concrete columns, Insitu concrete walls poured against existing concrete walls with scabbled and epoxied starters. Concrete columns and foundations were strengthened and a new 8m long shearwall was built 2 floors high on the top of the carpark for the new steel and timber apartment structure. All of this work was undertaken without the closure of the carpark.

This building involved an extension to the YHA youth hostel into the adjoining brick building. The original Brick façade was retained and strengthened with insitu and sprayed concrete and a new 5 story concrete structure was built behind the façade. All work was undertaken without disruption to the existing YHA building.

Wallace was involved with Arrow International in the construction of the new surgical block at Wakefield Hospital. The work involved a new 3 story structure with strengthening and alterations to the existing Wakefield Hospital main block. Insitu and sprayed concrete was used to strengthen the existing structure to bring it up to the standard of the new additions. All work was completed with minimal disruption to this busy private hospital

This building was re-strengthened and upgraded in 2002. The building was converted intotwo full floor apartments with a new penthouse constructed on the top floor. The work involved concrete underpinning and new foundation walls to create new large garages. The structure of the building was seismically upgraded and a new concrete structure was built to extend the building to the rear and increase the footplate for the new penthouse.

Originally built in 1908 this distinctive brick facade was retained and strengthened with reinforced concrete while a new 8-story apartment complex built behind the faade. The apartment structure was built with new concrete Shearwalls and 8 floors of Hibond concrete floors with floorplates of over 1000m2

The State Insurance building is one of Wellington’s most distinctive and distinguished pieces of architecture marking the beginning of modernism in Wellington. It was a state of the art building for the time, not just for its high standard of architectural design, but for its structural design, however after 60 years and the sale of the building to new owners the building was re-strengthened in 1998 and a 3 story addition designed by Athfeild Architects. Wallace formed 3 sets of insitu concrete Shearwalls up the existing lift shafts for the 8 stories of existing building. Thousands of reinforcing starters were drilled and epoxied into the original concrete lift shaft walls and the floors were cut out and stitched into the new Shearwalls creating a new structure transferring load from the building extension down to the basement and upgraded foundations

Civil Construction
Wallace Building Contractors have a long history of civil projects completed throughout the Wellington Region over the last 30 years. Wallace is proud of completing many difficult and unique civil projects and has worked on major flood protection to waterways throughout Wellington, multiple headwalls and inlet structures in areas with limited access and major sewer and stormwater works.
Australian War Memorial

2015 – Wallace Building Contractors was proud to be involved in the construction of the Australian War Memorial at the National war memorial park. It commemorates the long and close relationship between the people of Australia and New Zealand, and in particular, our shared Anzac experience of war. It comprises 15 columns, each 6m tall and arranged in an open array on a surface of red sandstone and dark grey basalt.
All of Wallaces hard work is buried under the red and grey sandstone paving however over 300m3 of concrete was installed including a 500mm thick raft slab under the stone columns with a fibremesh wearing slab surrounding it. 7 Tree pits were formed for the Eucalyptus trees and a series of 80 different height plinths were formed to support the varying size sandstone blocks and stairs.
Our work drove the tight programme and was completed 2 weeks ahead of schedule giving the Australian servicemen and government dignitary’s plenty of time to visit the memorial before the opening of the remainder of the park on Anzac Day 2015.
Lower Hutt Anzac Memorial

2015 – Wallace Building Contractors was asked by Naylor Love to complete the concrete works for the Lower Hutt Anzac memorial upgrade. As was the case with most memorial upgrades before the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli the timeframe to complete these works was very tight. New wearing slabs, steps and retaining walls were constructed and one of the region’s largest cranes was brought in to shift the 15T cenotaph to the north, and re-orient it to face east into a wider expanse of lawn. Wallace then mass-filled concrete under the new location of the cenotaph and formed steps around it to make it look like it had always been there.
Boulcott Flood Protection

2012 – Wallace have again been involved in another section of the Hutt River Flood Protection. This time in the Boulcout Flood protection upgrade project working for Goodmans Contractors. Work involved constructing 400m of new Insitu Concrete retaining walls around Connolly St where the river road was diverted over the new stopbank. The retaining walls up to 2m high provide flood protection to the surrounding roads and houses. Wallace was also involved in miscellaneous concrete works and structuressuch as Stormwater penstocks, cable protection slabs, access stairs, kerbing, channels and paving.

2011 – Formwork and placing of Concrete to the new subway under the double lane railway lines in Paraparaumu. Included new Ramps and stairs, insitu walls and soffits. Work was completed while commuters used the railway station and towards the end of a busy project involving the double tracking of the Waikanae to Wellington railway lines.
2010 – Foundations, Retaining walls and office slabs for the new Asphalt plant at Horokiwi Quarry. Included the construction of a concrete plantroom and ablutions block. Setting up cast In bolts for the new machinery to be installed onto, New Transformer room and tank stands

2008 – Wallace was involved in the Stage 2 landfill development at the Silverstream Landfill providing a new 9 million M3 60m deep landfill pit. We worked on stabilisation of the landfill face with a 9m high concrete wall filter using 550m3 of No-Fines Concrete underneath an HDPE Liner with a face area of 2600m2. The contract Included design and manufacture of 2 steel formwork systems to allow further stabilisation to continue as needed.

2008 – Wallace worked on another stage of Hutt River Flood protection from Ava to Ewen Bridge including underpinning work on the Ava Rail Bridge concrete supports involving temporary realignment of the river with reinforcement into the existing bridge piles and encasement with concrete with no delays to the rail service. Other work included new concrete Floodwalls and outlets, concrete stairs and sloping aprons, 2km of paving and retaining work
Greening of the Quays

2007 – This Contract involved the forming of 1.5km of decorative concrete road islands along the length of Aotea and Jervious Quay. Work was completed under the Higgins Contractors Traffic Management plan from 9:00 – 3:30. The work involved exposed aggregate surrounding newly planted Pohutukawas with cast in wind delfecting screens and cast in up lighting.

2005 – Wallace Building Contractors was involved with Higgins Contractors in the road widening upgrade of SH1 in Paremata with the construction of a 700m long decorative concrete retaining wall at Goat Point from Paremata to Plimmerton. The Work was undertaken in an area between SH1 and the railway main trunk line. Due to the tight confines of the working area available we produced a rolling and lifting formwork system to pour the wall.
The formwork involved a specifically made steel mould to produce a pattern along the wall at a constant RL as wall height increased and decreased. It was lifted into place by winches on a specially built mobile Gantry, which was clad for all weather protection and safety from trains. This methodology was employed as the wall was in some places just 1.5m from the train tracks. The Gantry moved along a track bolted to the concrete footing and was poured in two 5m sections every 2 days.
During the excavation and construction of the wall foundations work was completed within 100mm of the North Island main fibre optic cable. Enhancement work was completed along the length of the wall including a galvanised steel pedestrian barrier,lampposts footings and cast in sockets for steel lampposts.

2006 – This Contract was for the removal and construction of the Black Creek Bridge in Wainuiomata as part of the Stream widening contract awarded to Dixon & Dunlop. Wallace removed the old footbridge and constructed new bridge abutments on 30m piles then craned in the new Precast Bridge and completed with handrails, paving and landscaping.
Wallace Building Contractors involvement in the Porriua stream flood protection was as the main contractor to the Wellington Regional Council. The work undertaken involved the realignment of the stream and concrete floodwalls through the City Center.
The realignment included building up new stop banks with conditioned fill and placement of Rip Rap Rock to both sides of the wetlands at the mouth of the stream. The concrete floodwalls were constructed to protect the neighboring commercial buildings and had a decorative finish to both sides. The contract also included a large area of landscaping which involved the building of timber walkways over the wetland area and the complete planting of the 2.5-kilometer length of the stream flood protection works.
This contract, completed in 1994 was the biggest workload that Wallace Building Contractors had taken on at the time. The contract was completed on time and within the Council budget. During construction we encountered a 5-year flood and all our temporary works held well. We had temporary walls and bunds along with flow over weirs crossing the stream. This was a major construction project within the Porriua City centre.
Gavin Wallace – Company Director
Gavin Wallace is the Company Director of Wallace Building Contractors and has played a pivotal role in leading the business through a period of sustained growth and stability. Since taking responsibility for the day‑to‑day leadership of the company, Gavin has strengthened operational consistency, improved delivery performance, and built a resilient business that operates reliably across all market conditions. With extensive experience in commercial construction and project management, he has successfully overseen the delivery of a wide range of commercial and civil projects. Gavin is a qualified Carpenter and holds a Diploma in Architectural Technology, giving him a strong practical and technical foundation that underpins decisive leadership, high standards of workmanship, and consistently successful project outcomes across the business.
Amy Wallace – CFO
Amy Wallace is the Chief Financial Officer of Wallace Building Contractors and is responsible for the day‑to‑day financial and administrative management of the business. Having successfully overseen the office and operational support functions for many years, Amy plays a key role in ensuring the company runs efficiently, compliantly, and sustainably. With a background in insurance underwriting, she brings a strong understanding of risk management, financial controls, and regulatory compliance, all of which are critical in today’s construction environment. Amy’s experience and professional approach provide essential support to both management and site teams across the business.
Ben Burns – Construction Manager
Ben Burns is a Construction Manager at Wallace Building Contractors and a senior leader within the business, having been an integral part of the company since 2013. With extensive expertise in concrete construction and large‑scale project delivery, Ben is responsible for the successful execution of a number of the company’s most significant and high‑value projects. He provides strong leadership across multiple site teams and maintains overall responsibility for programme delivery, commercial performance, quality, and health and safety outcomes. Working closely with senior management, Ben plays an important role in upholding the company’s standards and reputation while ensuring client expectations are consistently met or exceeded. Known for his hands‑on management style, Ben drives strong productivity and performance across the projects he manages, contributing significantly to the company’s ongoing success.
Brady McMinn is a Construction Manager at Wallace Building Contractors and a highly respected senior member of the leadership team. Having joined the company over 20 years ago while completing his apprenticeship, Brady has developed an in‑depth understanding of the business and the construction industry, supported by decades of hands‑on and management experience. He is entrusted with the delivery of major, high‑profile projects and provides end‑to‑end oversight of complex works from planning through to completion. Brady leads large site teams and works closely with senior management to ensure projects align with the company’s operational, commercial, and quality objectives. Known for his calm & considered leadership, attention to detail, and uncompromising standards, he consistently delivers high‑quality outcomes while fostering strong team performance. Brady’s long‑standing commitment to the company, combined with his technical expertise and leadership capability, makes him a critical contributor to the stability, performance, and reputation of Wallace Building Contractors.
Matt Prescott is the Commercial Manager at Wallace Building Contractors and plays a key role in supporting the strategic and day‑to‑day operations of the business. Working closely with the Company Director, Matt provides commercial oversight and operational support across projects, while also assisting Site Managers to ensure works are delivered efficiently, safely, and in line with programme and budget expectations. Matt brings many years of experience across both the civil and construction sectors, including six years in project management roles in Australia. He holds a Diploma in Architectural Technology and has a strong working knowledge of health and safety systems, project planning, and construction documentation. Proficient in MS Project and AutoCAD, Matt contributes practical, well‑informed input that supports successful project outcomes across the company’s portfolio.
Ken Wallace – Senior Advisor
Ken Wallace represents the second generation of the Wallace family to lead Wallace Building Contractors. Building on the foundation established by his father, who founded the company in 1959, Ken played a pivotal role in shaping the business into what it is today. In the early 1990s, he led the strategic shift from carpentry into specialising in concrete construction, a move that defined the company’s future direction. With decades of hands‑on industry experience, Ken continues to provide valuable guidance and practical insight as a Senior Advisor. He remains closely connected to site teams and brings a deep understanding of construction challenges, allowing him to contribute meaningfully through experience, mentorship, and problem‑solving.
Rani Grace is the Head Quantity Surveyor at Wallace Building Contractors and plays a key role in the commercial management of projects across the business. He holds a National Diploma in Construction (Level 6) in Quantity Surveying and brings a well‑rounded understanding of both cost control and construction delivery. Prior to joining Wallace Building Contractors, Rani worked with Forman Building Systems as a Sales Coordinator, giving him valuable exposure to commercial processes and client engagement. He also has a hands‑on background in residential construction as a qualified carpenter, providing him with strong practical insight that supports accurate pricing, effective budgeting, and informed decision‑making throughout the lifecycle of each project.
Mark Bloomfield is the Plant Manager at Wallace Building Contractors and brings over 30 years of experience in the construction industry. Having been with the company since 2001, Mark plays a critical role in supporting project delivery across all sites. Based at the company workshop, he leads a dedicated team responsible for the manufacture of formwork and construction components required on site. Mark oversees the availability, maintenance, and repair of plant and equipment, ensuring site teams have the resources they need to operate efficiently and without delay. A qualified carpenter with additional qualifications in electrical certification and health and safety, Mark’s technical knowledge, leadership, and attention to detail make him a key contributor to the smooth running and reliability of the company’s operations.
Amber Searle – Office Manager
Amber Searle is the Office Manager at Wallace Building Contractors and plays a key role in overseeing the day‑to‑day administration and operational coordination of the business. Having recently joined the company, Amber is taking on responsibility for managing office functions, systems, and workflows that support both management and site teams. She brings transferable experience from the real estate industry, along with a strong understanding of the demands and disciplines required to keep a family‑owned business operating smoothly. Amber’s structured, proactive approach supports efficiency, consistency, and effective communication across the company.
Calum Bron – Site Manager
Calum Bron is a Site Manager at Wallace Building Contractors and has been with the company since 2016, progressing steadily through the business into a leadership role. He holds a National Certificate in Concrete Construction (Level 4), which he completed in 2020, and was Highly Commended in the 2019 Concrete Apprentice of the Year Awards, recognising his early commitment and capability within the industry. Calum now leads his own site teams on several of the company’s larger projects and is known for his strong work ethic, developing leadership skills, and high standards of workmanship. His continued progression reflects both his dedication and the company’s commitment to developing talent from within.
Jared Smith – Site Manager
Jared Smith is a Site Manager at Wallace Building Contractors, having joined the business in 2023 from Redican Allwood. Jared was specifically recruited for his proven experience, leadership capability, and strong reputation within the industry. Since joining Wallace, he has quickly demonstrated his value by successfully running large projects, managing site programmes, and leading teams to deliver high‑quality outcomes. Jared is trusted with responsibility for safety, productivity, and programme performance on his sites and is known for his clear communication style and ability to build strong working relationships with clients, consultants, and site teams. His professionalism and consistent delivery make him an integral part of the company’s senior site leadership team.
Alistair McIntyre is a Senior Site Foreman at Wallace Building Contractors and brings over 35 years of experience across commercial and civil construction projects in both New Zealand and Australia. Having been with the company since 2001, Alistair has played a key role in the successful delivery of a number of complex and high‑profile projects. His experience includes leading the concrete works at One Market Lane and acting as Foreman on the Wellington Airport Carpark project. Most recently, Alistair successfully oversaw the completed seismic upgrade of the Wellington Town Hall. Known for his depth of technical knowledge, strong leadership on site, and ability to manage challenging projects, Alistair is a highly respected and integral member of the Wallace Building Contractors team.
Sean Rigby – Site Foreman
Sean Rigby is a Site Foreman at Wallace Building Contractors and brings many years of experience in commercial construction. He joined the company in 2017 as a Leading Hand Carpenter and has progressed through the business through his strong focus on quality, efficiency, and concrete construction delivery. Sean now leads his own site teams and is responsible for managing projects across the Wellington region. Known for his practical leadership style and commitment to high standards of workmanship, Sean plays an important role in the successful delivery of projects and the ongoing performance of site operations.
Scott Gordon leads the ComFlor division of Wallace Building Contractors through Wellington Studwelders Ltd and is responsible for the delivery of specialist ComFlor installation services across the region. Managing a skilled team of dedicated installation staff, Scott works on projects for Wallace Building Contractors as well as multiple main contractors throughout Wellington. Under his leadership, the team has successfully installed more than 100,000m² of ComFlor on some of Wellington’s largest and most significant construction projects. Scott’s technical expertise, coordination skills, and ability to deliver complex installations efficiently make him a key contributor to the company’s broader project delivery capability.
Connor joined Wallace Building Contractors in 2022 after previously working on domestic concrete slabs with RFL. Since joining the team, he has quickly proven himself to be a capable and emerging leader within the business. Through his strong work ethic, technical ability, and positive leadership style, Connor has progressed into a Site Foreman / QA Manager role where he supports site management and ensures projects are delivered to Wallace Building Contractors’ high standards. Connor completed his BCITO apprenticeship in Concrete Construction, achieving the New Zealand Certificate in Concrete Construction (Commercial and Civil Infrastructure) Level 4. He is also nearing completion of the New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trades Supervision (Commercial Construction) Level 5, further strengthening his ability to lead teams and manage site delivery effectively.
Chris McCafferty – Site Foreman
Chris McCafferty is a Site Foreman at Wallace Building Contractors and has been with the company since 2021. Originally from Ireland, Chris has since made New Zealand his home, where he has settled with his family after gaining residency. With a strong work ethic and a practical, hands-on approach, Chris plays an important role in managing site operations and supporting the successful delivery of projects. Known for his reliability and commitment to getting the job done right, he is a valued member of the Wallace Building site leadership team.
Carissa is our office administrator; she provides office support to the team and helps with the smooth-running of the business. Carissa previously worked as a Paralegal in an Australian Law Firm.
Colin Daly – Site Foreman
Colin joined Wallace Building Contractors in 2019. Originally from Ireland after a brief stint in Australia he now calls NZ home. Colin impresses with his hardworking attributes making sure the job gets done on time. He’s well respected by his staff ad project managers.
